Iowa State selects Eustachy as head coach

Iowa State has named Larry Eustachy head men's basketball coach, succeeding Tim Floyd. Floyd resigned to become director of basketball operations for the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls.

Eustachy has spent the last five seasons as head coach at Utah State. In route to a 98-53 record at the school, Eustachy earned Big West Conference coach-of-the-year honors. He also led Utah State to the conference championship slot in 1995 for the first time in 15 years. Prior to his tenure at Utah State, Eustachy led the program at Idaho from 1990 to 1993. He also has served as an assistant coach at Ball State, Utah, Idaho, Mississippi State and Citrus (California) Junior College.

Collegiately, Eustachy played basketball at Citrus Junior College for two seasons before transferring to Long Beach State where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education. He also holds a teaching certificate from Azusa Pacific.



Donald S. Stanton announced plans to retire as president at Oglethorpe, effective June 30, 1999 ... Frederick P. Whiddon, president at South Alabama, announced retirement plans, effective September 30.


Mississippi College named Anita Gowin faculty athletics representative, succeeding Sid Moller, who was named interim dean of the law school. Gowin is chair of the department of foreign languages.


Ed Grom selected as interim athletics director at Missouri-Kansas City, replacing Lee Hunt, who retired, effective July 1. Grom was assistant athletics director at the school ... Colorado-Colorado Springs chose Ruben "Randy" Cubero as interim athletics director. Cubero, who replaces Theo Gregory, most recently was an athletics administrator at Air Force ... Dana Craft appointed interim athletics director at Southwest Texas. Craft has been associate director of athletics at the school for the past 17 years ... Eugene Marshall, athletics director at Staten Island, resigned.


Southern Mississippi promoted David Bounds and Rick Villarreal to associate athletics director. Bounds was assistant athletics director and Villarreal was director of football operations ... Regina Sullivan selected as associate athletics director at UC San Diego, replacing Marilyn Hill.


Mark Perdue promoted to assistant athletics director for sports medicine at South Carolina-Spartanburg. Perdue had been head athletic trainer ... East Tennessee appointed Ann Brett Gillespie assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions ... Earl Mathewson accepted the position of assistant athletics director for operations at Quinnipiac. Mathewson has been director of athletics operations and equipment at the school since 1996 ... Ed Atlas hired as assistant athletics director for sports information at Tennessee State ... North Carolina-Charlotte's Mark Colone resigned as assistant athletics director for marketing and public relations to become vice-president for marketing and public relations at Signature Sports Group, Inc., a sports marketing agency.


Baseball--Mike Maack named head coach at Tennessee Tech. Maack, who succeeds 25-year veteran David Mays, has been an assistant coach at Tennessee for the past two seasons ... Rutgers-Newark added Stan Hyman as head coach. Most recently, Hyman has been head baseball coach, associate athletics director and sports information director at Albright ... Steve Trimper, assistant coach at Vermont for the past four seasons, chosen as head coach at Manhattan, where he also will fulfill responsibilities as director of marketing for athletics ... Olivet hired Edward Uschold as head coach. Uschold, who was an assistant baseball coach at Manchester in 1997-98, also will be an assistant football coach responsible for receivers ... Baseball assistants--Jim Ricklefsen promoted to top assistant at Lamar, replacing Brian Biggers. Ricklefsen has been an assistant on the staff since last season ... Lebanon Valley appointed Francis "Fran" White assistant coach ... New Orleans volunteer coach Jay Artigues left to assume the head coaching post at Bossier Parish (Louisiana) Community College ... Rick Duckett resigned as head coach at Fayetteville State to become head coach at Winston-Salem State ... Ritzman, who replaces Zaf Bludevich, has been a volunteer assistant coach with the program during the past year ... Field hockey--Saint Michael's promoted Karen Okun to head coach. Okun, who succeeds Anne Adams, has been top assistant coach with the program for the past eight seasons.

Marketing/promotions/public relations -- New Mexico chose Nikkie Epley as assistant director of marketing, community and public relations. Mark Owens chosen as sports information director at Middle Tennessee State, succeeding Ed Given, who is retiring after 15 years in the position. The Collegiate Licensing Company announced it will exclusively represent all nine campuses of the University of Texas system. Collegiate Licensing Company, a full-service licensing representative, is the oldest and largest licensing representative in the nation whose memberships include the NCAA and more than 160 colleges, universities, bowl games and athletics conferences.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has reached an agreement with the Division II Athletics Directors Association to serve as administrator of the association. This is the fifth association NACDA administers. Among the others is the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), which elected Carol Oakland, director of athletics development at Augustana (South Dakota), as president for 1998-99.


The Northeast Conference selected Ronald Ratner as assistant director for communications and championships.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference named Lonza Hardy associate commissioner, LaRita Greer assistant commissioner for championships, Harold Clark assistant commissioner for administration, Patrick Carter assistant commissioner for compliance and Smita Parikh assistant commissioner for finance.

Jon Martin announced as director of media relations at the North Central Conference.

Conference USA hired Matt Lloyd as assistant director of information services. For the past year, Lloyd has been direc-tor of media services for the Arena Foot-ball League.

Eric Goodwin and Gail Wilkins added as communications assistants for the Big East Conference.

America East assistant director of communications Mike Hirschman resigned to become director of public relations for the Asheville (North Carolina) professional hockey team of the United Hockey League.

Eric Harmon chosen as supervisor of men's basketball officials for the Mid-American Conference. Harmon has officiated NCAA Division I men's basketball for 32 years and has supervised basketball referees in the Mid-Continent Conference since 1990 and the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference since 1989.


The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named Lee McElroy, director of athletics at American, to chair the Sears Directors' Cup Committee. He replaces Elaine Dreidame, senior associate director of athletics at Dayton. NACDA also named Jude Killy as an administrative assistant. Killy had been an intern with the association in 1996-97.

The NCAA Division II College Commissioners Association announced the following officers for the 1998-99 year: Don Landry, Sunshine State Conference, president; Tom Brown, Great Lakes Athletic Conference, vice-president; Kurt Patberg, Northern Sun Conference, secretary-treasurer.


Jane Jankowski selected as public information coordinator II. Jankowski most recently served as public affairs officer for Allied Signal.

Shane Lyons, senior membership services representative and coordinator of interpretations, appointed associate athletics director for compliance at Texas Tech, succeeding Bob Burton, who resigned. Lyons has been with the Association since 1989.


The Big South chose Holly Deem, Liberty, and Corey Reed, Radford, as winners of the Christenberry Award presented to a male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average who graduated from a member institution. Deem, a nursing major, was Liberty's first track GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Reed, a chemistry major, garnered 1998 first team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors as a basketball player.

Brad Wilkerson named 1998 Rotary Smith Award winner. Wilkerson, a pitcher and outfielder at Florida, is the school's career leader in batting average, runs, home runs and RBIs.

Eugene McCabe's position at Washington and Lee was listed incorrectly in the August 3 issue of The NCAA News. He is assistant men's lacrosse coach and also will serve as assistant football coach.


John Devlin, assistant football coach at Bloomsburg, died July 15 after suffering a heart attack. He was 61. A 1959 graduate of West Chester, Devlin was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 1984. Devlin had begun his sixth year with Bloomsburg and had also served as defensive coordinator at Tulane, assistant coach/linebackers coach at Temple and defensive coordinator at Kentucky and Maryland.

Missouri's defensive line coach, Curtis Jones, died July 26 after suffering a heart attack. He was 55. Jones played collegiate football at Missouri in 1966 and 1967 before competing in the National Football League for three seasons as a defensive lineman and linebacker with the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers.
