Chancellors and presidents

Eastern Illinois selected William Perry as president, effective July 1 … Tracy Fitzsimmons will assume the presidency at Shenandoah in July 2008 … Delaware Valley tabbed Joseph Brosnan as president … John Dunn was selected as president of Western Michigan. He had been the interim chancellor at Southern Illinois … George Ross will become president of Alcorn State … Angelo State named Joseph Rallo as president, effective June 1. Rallo had been provost and academic vice president at Western Illinois … Denvy Bowman was chosen as president at Capital after serving in an interim capacity … Cedar Crest hired Jill Leauber Sherman as president … Michael Garrison was named president at West Virginia … Rev. Philip Johnson was named president at Finlandia … Medaille selected Richard Jurasek as its new president.

Director of athletics

Maryville (Missouri) named Tony Duckworth as director of athletics. Duckworth spent the last six years as associate director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach at Huntingdon. He replaces Linda Anderson … John Stanley was selected as director of athletics at Evansville. Stanley has spent the past 34 years working in the banking industry. He replaces Bill McGillis, who is leaving after five years to become senior associate director of athletics at South Florida.

Associate directors of athletics

Lenoir-Rhyne promoted Todd Law­ing to associate director of athletics … After 28 years with the Washington State athletics department, Marcia Saneholtz has decided to retire. The 1997 National Association of Collegiate Women’s Ath­letic Administrators administrator of the year, Saneholtz served as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at the school.

Assistant directors of athletics

Rhode Island College named Tim McCabe as assistant athletics director of development and marketing. He replaces Mike Morrison, who accepted a similar position at Connecticut … Sandy Morgrage was selected as assistant athletics director for sports medicine at Assumption. Morgrage worked as head athletic trainer at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts) from 1999-2005 … Shena Hollar and Dave Markland were promoted to assistant directors of athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne.


Men’s basketball —  John Tharp is the new head coach at Hillsdale. Tharp spent 13 seasons as head coach at Lawrence and became the most successful coach in program history. Joel DePagter was named interim coach at Lawrence … Rick Majerus signed a six-year contract to become head men’s basketball coach at Saint Louis.  Majerus last coached at Utah, where he led the program to 10 NCAA tournament appearances in 15 seasons. He has also been at the helm of the Ball State and Marquette programs. Majerus spent the past three years as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. He replaces Brad SoderbergPerry Clark was hired as head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Clark previously led the programs at Miami (Florida) and Tulane. He replaces Ronnie Arrow, who resigned for a position at South Alabama … Rick Pitino inked a three-year contract extension that will keep him at Louisville through 2013 … After leading Notre Dame to 24 wins last season, Mike Brey was rewarded with a two-year contract extension … Jim Wooldridge was hired at UC Riverside. Wooldridge was most recently the coach at Kansas State for six seasons … Marc Smith was hired as the head coach at Millikin. Smith spent the past five seasons at the helm of the Keystone program. He previously spent five years as an assistant with Millikin … South Carolina State tabbed Tim Carter to lead its basketball program. Carter spent the past season as an assistant at Florida State. He succeeds Jamal Brown … Central Florida and men’s basketball coach Kirk Speraw agreed to a new four-year contract that will keep him at the school through 2011. Speraw has spent the past 14 seasons leading the Knights and has compiled a 231-187 record during his tenure … Steve Hettinga was named head coach at Lake Superior State. Hettinga spent last season leading the MacMurray program and also coached 11 years at Olivet. He succeeds Mike Fitzner.

Men’s basketball assistants — Arizona added Kevin O’Neill to its staff. O’Neill formerly served as the head coach at Marquette. He replaces Jim RosboroughIsaac Brown was selected as an assistant at Arkansas. Brown most recently served as an assistant as South Alabama … Georgia State named Chad Dollar as an assistant coach … Winthrop added Larry Dixon Jr. to its staff. Dixon had served as an assistant at East Carolina for the past three seasons … Delaware added Jeff Rafferty to its staff. Rafferty previously coached at New Hampshire. He replaces Ryan Iversen.

Women’s basketball — Pacific (Oregon) tabbed Sharon Rissmiller as its head coach. A former standout player at Portland, Rissmiller replaces Jeff Thompson … After 19 seasons at the helm of the Lawrence program, Amy Proctor has resigned her post. During her tenure, Proctor compiled an overall record of 247-192 … Dave Wilbers is the new head coach at Arkansas Tech. An assistant at Oral Roberts for the past six seasons, Wilbers also coached at Missouri from 1998-2001. He replaces Todd Schaefer, who resigned to accept an associate head coach position at Cincinnati … Charlotte named Karen Aston as its head coach. Aston had been an assistant at Baylor. She succeeds Amanda Butler, who left after two seasons to coach at Florida … Pamela Bass left her post at Longwood to become the head women’s coach at Colgate. She replaces Kristin Hughes, who resigned at the end of last season … Mike Bradbury was hired as the head women’s basketball coach at Morehead State. A 15-year veteran of the women’s game, Bradbury spent the past five seasons as the top assistant at Xavier. He has also coached at Cincinnati, East Tennessee State, Virginia Com­mon­wealth and Chattanooga, his alma mater … Wisconsin-Green Bay hired Matt Bollant to lead the program. He replaces Kevin Borseth.

Women’s basketball assistants — Christie Sides will not return to the LSU staff … Francis Marion added Jami Cornwell to its staff. Cornwell spent the past two years as an assistant at Pfeiffer … Jodi Greve was hired at San Jose State … Former Washington standout Kayla Burt was added to the staff at Portland. She replaces Loree Payne Seth Kushkin was hired as an assistant at Auburn. He served in a similar capacity during the past two seasons at Georgia Tech. Kushkin replaces Sue Guevara, who left to become head coach at Central Michigan … Washington State hired Brian Holsinger as an assistant coach. Holsinger spent the past two years as head coach at Montana Tech.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Longwood tabbed Catherine Hanson as its men’s and women’s coach. Hanson recently served as an assistant with the Colgate cross country and track and field programs.

Football assistants — Paul Kinsella has been named the offensive coordinator at Lawrence. Kinsella spent the past five seasons at Lakeland … McNeese State added Broderick Fobbs to its staff … Fordham added Patrick Moore, Mark Michaels, Will McCain and Chris Fusaro to its staff … Former Tennessee quarterback Jim Bob Cooter will return to his alma mater as a graduate assistant … Jeff Hammerschmidt was selected as linebackers coach at San Jose State. He most recently coached at Stanford … Bridgewater State (Massachusetts) promoted Joe Verria to associate head football coach. Verria, who also played at Bridgewater State, is entering his 20th season as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

Men’s and women’s golf — Stephanie Barker resigned her post as head women’s coach at Kentucky. Barker spent the past six seasons leading the program … Scott Tiernan was chosen as head golf coach at Greensboro. He will replace longtime coach Robert Linville, who will remain at the school in an associate head coaching capacity. Tiernan will also assume duties as assistant sports information director … Texas women’s golf coach Susan Watkins resigned after 14 years at the program’s helm. During her tenure, the Longhorns won five conference championships.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Cristian da Silva was named men’s coach at New Jersey City. A former Major League Soccer player, da Silva succeeds Kevin East … Delaware selected Bryan Vitagliano as an assistant coach. The former Maryland standout had been working as an assistant at his alma mater. He succeeds Guy Abrahamson … Mount Olive tabbed Matt Hisler as head women’s coach. He succeeds Chris Shaw, who stepped down in March to accept an assistant coaching position at Fresno State … Mike Kulas and Michelle Berei were added to the men’s and women’s staffs, respectively, at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Softball — Lander tabbed Brandon Duncan to lead the program. Duncan spent the last season as an assistant coach at Virginia. He replaces interim coach Jennifer Gustin.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Mary­ville (Missouri) women’s tennis coach LaShonn Alexander resigned her post. Alexander spent three years at the program’s helm.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Massachusetts-Dartmouth hired Steve DeRossi as its head women’s volleyball coach. DeRossi has spent the past 21 years as the head boys’ volleyball coach at New Bedford High School and led the team to eight state championships during his tenure. He succeeds Jocelyn Costa, who resigned her post.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants —  Jeremy Sands was hired as the top assistant at Army. Sands spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Colorado-Colorado Springs … Cal State Bakersfield selected Fabiana Abreu as an assistant coach. Abreu joins the program after five years as an assistant with Texas-Pan American.


Business — Northern Arizona named Jeff Pritsker as the business manager of the athletics department. Pritsker has previously held positions at Florida State, South Dakota State and Marquette.


The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced that William Wolper has been named its first full-time commissioner.  Wolper most recently worked as director of information/assistant to the commissioner for the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He succeeds Rich Meckfessel, who retired after seven years with the conference.


Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has been named vice president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association exe­cu­tive committee for a two-year term. Marquette’s Terri Mitchell was also named to the executive committee as treasurer ... Florida’s Rhonda Faehn was named coach of the year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.


Former Auburn baseball student-athlete Josh Hancock died in a car accident April 29. Hancock was a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals … Former Washington State women’s soccer player Liz Duncan was killed April 21 after she was hit by a car while jogging. Duncan was 26 … Hampton softball coach Tiny Laster Jr. died May 3 after a battle with kidney disease. The head coach at Hampton since 1989, Laster won more than 500 games during his career. He also spent 13 seasons as head coach of the volleyball team and seven at the helm of the women’s basketball program. Laster was 61 … Former Illinois football all-American Alex Agase died May 3 at the age of 85. Agase had a six-year professional career that included three championships in four seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He went on to coach at Northwestern and Purdue … Former Syracuse football standout Kevin Mitchell died April 30 after suffering a heart attack. Mitchell spent 10 seasons in the NFL with San Francisco, New Orleans and Washington. He was 36 … Former Kentucky football player Tom Hutchinson died May 5 at the age of 65.
