Chancellors and presidents
Patrick Harker was named president at Delaware. Harker was previously dean of the Wharton School of Business at Pennsylvania … George Washington selected Steven Knapp as president. Knapp has been provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins … Michael McKinney was chosen as president of the Texas A&M system … John Minahan has been named president of Western Oregon after having served on an interim basis.
Directors of athletics
St. Bonaventure named Steve Watson as director of intercollegiate athletics. The associate athletics director at Eastern Michigan for the past four years, Watson replaces Ronald Zwierlein, who is retiring January 31 … San Diego Executive Director of Athletics Ky Snyder signed a three-year contract extension.
Associate directors of athletics
Stanford promoted Beth Goode to senior associate athletics director. Goode will also serve as the school’s senior woman administrator … Oregon State promoted Mark Massari to senior associate athletics director for external affairs. In his new role, Massari will lead several departments, including ticketing, sales, community outreach, sports marketing, promotions, video production, communications, media partnerships and other revenue-producing efforts. Massari has spent the past four years at Oregon State and previously worked for the San Francisco 49ers.
Assistant director of athletics
Dowling promoted Trish Cronin to assistant athletics director for sports medicine. Cronin previously served as head athletic trainer at Salve Regina for 15 years.
Baseball – Elizabethtown named Cliff Smith as its head baseball coach. A former standout at Brandeis, Smith most recently served as an assistant coach at Bowdoin and helped the program to a school-record 28 wins in 2006. A 2001 graduate of Brandeis, Smith went on to play five seasons of professional baseball, advancing to the Anaheim Angels Double-A affiliate. The former pitcher also played in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
Baseball assistants – Steve Harden was added at Delaware … East Carolina named Brian Cavanaugh director of baseball operations.
Men’s basketball – Clay Nunley was hired as the first men’s basketball coach at Randolph, which was previously Randolph-Macon Woman’s. The school will begin admitting male students in 2007. The program will begin intercollegiate competition next season before playing a full conference schedule the following year … Nathan Hager was named the first men’s basketball coach at Regis (Massachusetts). Since 2003, Hager has been the associate head coach at Juniata. He also served as an assistant at Bethany (West Virginia) from 2001 to 2003. Regis will begin competition during the 2007-08 season.
Men’s basketball assistant – Minnesota released Bill Walker.
Men’s and women’s cross country – Simpson selected Brad Hofer as interim men’s and women’s coach. He replaces Todd Deely.
Football – Miami (Florida) promoted defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to head coach. Shannon led the Hurricanes defense for the past six seasons. A linebacker on the school’s 1987 national-championship team, Shannon becomes the sixth African-American coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. He replaces Larry Coker … San Jose State signed coach Dick Tomey to a contract extension through the 2010 season. Tomey has compiled 169 victories in 26 years as a head coach … North Carolina State named Tom O’Brien as its head football coach. O’Brien had spent the last 10 seasons at the helm of the Boston College program and led the Eagles to six consecutive bowl victories. O’Brien replaces Chuck Amato … Boston College hired Jeff Jagodzinski, currently the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers … Alabama-Birmingham announced the resignation of head coach Watson Brown … Arizona State tabbed Dennis Erickson as its new coach. Erickson recently completed his first season as head coach at Idaho … Idaho hired Washington State defensive coordinator Robb Akey as its third head coach in as many years … Tulane hired Bob Toledo as its head football coach. Toledo coach at UCLA from 1996-2002, compiling a 49-32 record and two Pacific-10 championships. This past season, Toledo coached at New Mexico as the team’s offensive coordinator. He replaces Chris Scelfo, who was removed after eight seasons … Gannon appointed Jim Kiernan as head coach … North Texas hired Todd Dodge as head coach. Dodge makes the jump from the high school ranks, where he led Southlake Carroll High School to three Texas state championships. He replaces Darrell Dickey … East Texas Baptist tabbed Mark Sartain as its head coach … Michael Lucas will lead the Southeastern Louisiana program … Minnesota-Morris announced the resignation of Ken Crandall. The program’s 7-3 record this fall was its first winning season since 1989 … Alabama-Birmingham hired Neil Callaway as its new head coach. Callaway previously served as Georgia’s offensive coordinator … East Carolina signed Skip Holtz to a contract extension that will keep him as head coach through 2011 … Garin Higgins was named coach at Emporia State … Idaho State selected John Zamberlin to lead its program … Denver Johnson inked a four-year contract extension with Illinois State … Minnesota State-Moorhead chose Damon Tomeo as head coach … After 23 years at the helm of the Air Force program, Fisher DeBerry announced his retirement. During his tenure, DeBerry compiled a 169-109-1 record, making him the winningest coach in Air Force history … Louisiana Tech tabbed Derek Dooley as its head coach. Dooley has spent the past two years as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins. He replaces Jack Bicknell, who was fired after eight seasons … Doane hired Matt Franzen … Grambling removed Melvin Spears. Sammy White was named interim coach … Arkansas extended Houston Nutt’s contract through 2012 … Muskingum named Al Logan head coach. Logan previously served as offensive coordinator at Wittenberg … Mario Cristobal was hired to lead the Florida International program. Cristobal becomes the first Cuban-American head coach in major college football … Former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh will take over the Stanford football program. Harbaugh spent the past three seasons as head coach at San Diego, leading the Toreros to a 29-6 record during his tenure. Harbaugh replaces Walt Harris, who was removed after the Cardinal posted a 1-11 record this season … Mike Hallett was chosen as Heidelberg’s new head football coach. Hallett was a two-time all-American at Mount Union and was a member of the 1993 national-championship team.
Football assistants – Louisiana-Lafayette assistants Rob Christophel, Brent Pry, Brian Crist and Terry Sims have been removed from the staff … Cincinnati added Joe Tresey, Greg Forest, Mike Elston and Tim Hinton … Nebraska added Buddy Wyatt to its staff … North Carolina selected John Blake as a defensive assistant … Kerry Coombs was added to the Cincinnati staff … Craig Boller and Tim Keane will not return to Memphis … Arizona State selected Rich Olson as an assistant coach … Georgia promoted quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo to offensive coordinator … UNLV announced the resignation of Noah Brindise.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey – North Dakota removed women’s coach Shantel Rivard after a 3-13-2 start to the season. Assistant Dennis Miller will take over on an interim basis.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Bates promoted Brett Allen to head women’s coach. He succeeds Wynn Hohlt, who will remain as the school’s field hockey coach.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Trei Morrison has resigned his post as men’s coach at Mars Hill. Morrison served as the program’s head coach for the past six seasons … Brett Teach was named the head men’s coach at Tusculum. Teach replaces Tony Castainca, who stepped down after 17 seasons … UC Irvine women’s coach April Heinrichs has stepped down from her position to accept a post with the United States Olympic Committee. Heinrichs led the Anteaters to a 3-13-1 record in her lone season at the helm. Scott Juniper will take over the program. Juniper spent the past year as an assistant with the program after a three-year stint as a coach for the UC Riverside men’s team … Bryan Waggoner was selected as the first-ever men’s soccer coach at Randolph … Keene State women’s coach Denise Lyons assumed responsibilities as the school’s senior woman administrator … Leslie Wray resigned her post as women’s coach at Towson … Benji Walton was tabbed as head women’s coach at Birmingham-Southern … Jeff Schellenberger has resigned from his post as head women’s coach at Kutztown, effective March 2. Schellenberger coached the Golden Bears for 12 seasons.
Softball – Ty Cook has resigned her post at Guilford. Cook compiled a 34-82 record in three seasons with the Quakers … Trinity (Texas) added Iyhia McMichael to its staff.
Softball assistant – Wes Holly was named assistant softball coach at Longwood. Holly served as head coach at Tusculum for the past three seasons.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – North Carolina State released diving coach Michael Finneran … Mars Hill added men’s swimming as a varsity sport for 2007-08 and named Teddy Guyer as its head coach.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Hans Romer was tabbed as interim men’s and women’s coach at Colby for the spring season … Antoine Manning was chosen as head men’s coach at Cornell (Iowa). He replaces Tim Preston.
Men’s and women’s tennis assistant – Valparaiso added Jeff French to the men’s staff.
Men’s and women’s track and field – Ball State named Randy Heisler head track and field and cross country coach.
Marketing – Winthrop tabbed Aimee Trantham as director of marketing and game management. Trantham previously worked at Texas-Pan American and Belmont.
Strength and conditioning – Pittsburgh selected Buddy Morris as its strength and conditioning coach and Tom Myslinski as assistant strength and conditioning coach … Texas-Pan American named Matt Taylor as its head strength and conditioning coach. Taylor is the first to hold this post at the school.
Strength and conditioning assistant – Delaware tabbed Brett Gerch as an assistant coach.
he Ohio Valley Conference promoted Heather Brown to director of media relations. Brown is in her third year with the conference office … The Sun Belt Conference named Rick Mello associate commissioner … The Ohio Valley Conference named Jim Jackson as coordinator of football officiating.
Alma quarterback Josh Brehm has been named the 14th recipient of the Gagliardi Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding football player in Division III.
Former Nebraska fullback Andra Franklin died December 6 at the age of 47 … Tri-State women’s volleyball coach Sarah Steele died December 11. She was 28 … Former Villanova basketball student-athlete and NBA great Paul Arizin died December 12 at the age of 78. One of the greatest 50 players in NBA history, Arizin led the Philadelphia Warriors to the 1956 title … Former Cincinnati basketball player Jonathon Carson died December 13. He was 29 … Former Montana State men’s basketball standout Al Beye died in an automobile accident December 15. Beye was 24.
