Janae Godoy’s 10-yard shot with 2:13 left in the second sudden-death overtime lifted Seattle Pacific to a 1-0 victory over West Florida in the Division II Women’s Soccer Championship on December 7 in Tampa, Florida.

The goal was Godoy’s eighth of the season but the fifth game-winning goal she scored in the last seven games, including three in the tournament.

“Being in my position, you have to run a lot to get to the back post, but it pays off when you get there,” the junior midfielder said. “The other team just didn’t get a good clearance, and it was touched right to me. I knew the keeper had already gone out, so I didn’t have to worry about her. I just hit it on the frame.”

Seattle Pacific coach Chuck Sekyra, a former soccer student-athlete at the school, has led the Falcons to the NCAA tournament in each of the last six seasons. But even winning back-to-back championships as a student-athlete didn’t prepare him for how he would feel to coach a team to a title.

“I always wondered what this would feel like, and it feels even better than I thought it would,” he said. “We never gave up. We stayed the course and believed that what we do well would get it done in the end. I thought we got stronger as the game went on.”

And get stronger they did against a West Florida team that entered the game undefeated, having outscored opponents, 92-6. But the Falcons outshot the Argonauts in the overtime, 6-2.

“Seattle Pacific came into the match with a great game plan and executed it extremely well,” said West Florida head coach Joe Bartlinski. “They have been to the finals three years in a row, so they know what it takes to compete at this level.”
