Grizzly women extend record title total

The NCAA News

Every time the Adams State men win a Division II cross country team title, the Adams State women win, too.

But for that matter, the women usually win regardless of how the men fare, and that’s why Adams State continues to add to its record total of team titles in the Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships.

The Grizzly women joined the men in sweeping this year’s cross country races in Butler, Pennsylvania, extending their current streak of championships to six straight while claiming their 14th Division II women’s crown overall.

It’s the sixth time that Adams State has swept the men’s and women’s team titles since the school moved from the NAIA to the NCAA in 1992. The women have won all six times that the men have claimed a championship.

Adams State’s top two runners, Heather Wood and Lavenna Mullenbach, finished ahead of runner-up Grand Valley State’s first scorer to give the Grizzlies the edge they needed to finish 23 points better than the Lakers.

The runner-up finish is Grand Valley State’s second in four years. Western State (Colorado) finished third.

In the race for the individual crown, Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler became the sixth woman to win two straight championships, setting up for an opportunity next year to become Division II’s first three-time woman champion.

Pixler was the only runner to finish the cold and snowy 6,000-meter course in less than 21 minutes, doing so by a second to lead her team to a fourth-place showing. She beat individual runner-up Neely Spence of Shippensburg by 28 seconds – just two weeks after Spence posted a record time of 21 minutes, 27 seconds, on the same Cooper’s Lake Campground Course during regional competition.

“It was really kind of amazing,” Pixler said. “Even at the end, I felt good. I had no idea how the race was going to go. I really had no plan going in. My only plan was to give it my best shot.”

The race between Pixler and Spence remained close through the first mile, then Pixler – who suffered a fractured femur and fractures in her back during last winter’s indoor track season and missed the entire outdoor season – pulled away.

“That’s the first time I cried while watching someone run, just knowing what she had been through to get to this point,” Seattle Pacific coach Erika Daligcon said. “Just to see her run with freedom…it was poetry in motion.”

Pixler and five other Falcons who ran Saturday expect to return next year, hoping to at least match Seattle Pacific’s runner-up finish last season and pose a challenge to Adams State’s title streak.

“Except for (Katie) Hart (Seattle Pacific’s sixth finisher in the race), these people have another year,” Daligcon said. “We’re real excited at the prospect of what we can be.”
