When Augsburg honors student-athletes during its annual awards event next Monday night, it will do so in style.

The athletics department plans a formal-attire event -- complete with a pre-ceremony “Maroon Carpet” -- in what the school is calling the Auggie Awards.

The ceremony, open to student-athletes, athletics staff members and guests, will honor seniors and also feature a video of the past year’s highlights. A student-alumni jazz ensemble will provide music.

Special awards include recognition of Augsburg’s outstanding men’ and women’s teams of the year, most improved teams of the year and academic team of the year. Individual awards include the school’s highest accolade, the Men’s and Women’s Honor Athlete Awards.

The ceremony is modeled after Minnesota’s Golden Goldy Awards, presented for the first time last year, as well as other awards ceremonies such as the ESPYs. Voting by athletics staff members produced four finalists in each awards category.
