Baseball coach notched 800th victory
John Ostrowski became the 11th Division III baseball coach to record 800 victories when Benedictine (Illinois) opened its annual spring trip to Florida with an extra-innings win over Eastern Nazarene.
Ostrowski also became the ninth Division III coach to achieve the milestone by winning all of the games at the same school, and he ranks sixth among active Division III coaches in victories.
He is in his 36th season at Benedictine, where his teams have won 55 percent of their games while winning 15 league titles and appearing seven times in the Division III Baseball Championship.
“As I look back at so many memories, I remember a lot of the home runs, the great pitched games, a lot of NCAA and NAIA tournament appearances, as well as the chance to coach my own son (Ted, from 2005 through last season). They are all great memories,” he said.
“But I think the thing I look back on and remember the most were the kids who were ‘late bloomers,’ who all of a sudden turned 20 or 21 and their game just came together. I think that’s what makes coaching at this level the most exciting.”
Last year, Benedictine paid tribute to the longtime coach’s tenure by establishing the John Ostrowski Leadership Endowed Scholarship, which recognizes leadership in the classroom and extracurricular activities.
