Division III Notes: Bowdoin College, Luther College and Franklin College
Milestones: Two coaches in two different sports recorded their 400th career coaching victories on the same day at Division III institutions. Bowdoin College men's ice hockey coach Terry Meagher reached the milestone in the Polar Bears' December 28 victory over Salem State College, and Luther College women's basketball coach Jane Hildebrand also notched win No. 400 when the Norse beat Blackburn College. Meagher, who is in his 25th season at Bowdoin, became the seventh Division III ice hockey coach to reach the standard and the 31st to do so in any division. Hildebrand became the 24th Division III women's basketball coach to record 400 victories in the midst of her 24th season at Luther.
Sports sponsorship: Franklin College is studying the possibility of developing an intercollegiate men's and women's swimming and diving program. The school, which currently sponsors 16 varsity sports, said there is no timetable for establishing a varsity swimming and diving program, but reported that a club program soon might be established for Franklin students. "Franklin College is geographically in a great area for swimming and diving," said Kurt Hass, a longtime high school swimming and diving coach who was appointed by the school as a consultant on establishing a program. "Indiana has for years been one of the top five swimming states, and central Indiana has a great number of athletes interested in a liberal arts education. That combination could be very beneficial to student-athletes and the college. My role will be sort of guiding the development of the swimming and diving program ."
