Division III Rewind
The following is a summary of Division III news from the week of May 19-23.
More than 200 presidents, administrators and coaches attended a Town Hall Meeting addressing issues related to membership growth Monday in Boston. Participants suggested that the difficulty of striking a balance between each institution’s own objectives and Division III ideals -- a problem amplified by continuing membership growth -- fuels tensions that persist among division members on a variety of issues. The wide-ranging discussion also touched at some length on such issues as whether Division III overemphasizes championships, discriminates against student-athletes by banning consideration of athletics leadership in financial aid packaging, or infringes on student-athletes’ opportunities to engage in nonathletics activities outside the regular season.
A two-sport student-athlete at Rosemont is headed to France this fall to teach English as part of a French Ministry of Education and Cultural Services program. Kristen Reilly, a four-year starter for the school’s field hockey squad who also plays softball, will begin a six- to nine-month teaching assignment at the Academie de Strasbourg.
Nominations are being solicited by June 13 for a vacancy on the Division III Men’s Tennis Committee. The appointee must be an administrator from the West region.
