Division III Rewind

Following is a summary of Division III news from the week of October 27-31.

• The Division III Presidents Council agreed to support a membership-sponsored proposal for the 2009 Convention that would permit student-athletes in six sports to play in one contest during the nontraditional season without giving up a season of participation. It is one of three proposals put forth for the Convention by member conferences that will be supported by the Council, which also decided to oppose three proposals – including one that would exempt conference postseason championship tournaments from the requirement to give student-athletes one day a week off from athletically related events.

• Additional nominations are being solicited for January 2009 vacancies on the Division III Management Council. Nominations are due by November 14. Council positions are open to presidents or chancellors, directors of athletics, senior woman administrators and faculty athletics representatives at Division III institutions and to conference officials. Ethnic minority candidates are encouraged to submit nomination materials.

Jimmy Keeling of Hardin-Simmons coached his 500th football game last weekend, leading the Cowboys to a victory over conference rival Sul Ross State.

• The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced brackets for its first ECAC Holiday Festival for Division III men’s and women’s basketball teams. The competition is scheduled during the first week of January.
