Division III Rewind

Following is a summary of Division III news from the week of December 8-12.

•         Messiah swept Division III’s soccer championships, as the men beat Stevens Institute on penalty kicks to claim their sixth crown and the women shut out Wheaton (Illinois) to claim their second title in four years.

•         A 53-rebound game in 1958 by Jim Roberts of Sewanee (University of the South) was recognized as an NCAA all-divisions, single-game record, after the school recently discovered evidence of the feat.

•         Alvernia, a member of the Middle Atlantic States College Athletic Corporation, will switch from the MASCAC’s Freedom Conference to its Commonwealth Conference, shoring up that league’s automatic-qualification status for NCAA championships.

•         The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association will gain an eighth women’s program with the decision by Marian (Wisconsin) to sponsor ice hockey for women beginning in fall 2009.
