First aid initiative; emerging sport list considered for 2009 Convention
The Division III Presidents Council will decide Thursday whether to sponsor five proposals recommended for consideration at the 2009 Convention.
Those include a proposal initiated by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference to require certification of head coaches in first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator. The Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee recommended and the Division III Management Council agreed that the Presidents Council should co-sponsor the proposal.
Also due for consideration by the Presidents Council are proposals to modify Division III’s emerging-sports list by adding equestrian and removing four currently listed sports, as well as proposals relating to the end date for the fall nontraditional season and the start date for practice in men’s and women’s ice hockey.
Two other proposals relating to voluntary off-season workout programs for student-athletes and scheduling of foreign tours were approved earlier this year for Presidents Council sponsorship.
The Council also will review conversations it plans to hold this Wednesday night with members of the Division III Chancellors and Presidents Advisory Group. That meeting will focus on a series of “white papers” that are being written under the Council’s direction to address issues arising from membership growth.
The Presidents Council also will receive a preliminary report on the first year of Division III’s two-year drug-education and testing pilot program.
A report of the Presidents Council’s actions will be published Friday in The NCAA News.
