If you are going to win your institution’s first NCAA championship in any sport, you may as well add some style points.

Howard Payne did just that Saturday by completing an undefeated season with its 68-54 victory over Messiah in the Division III Women’s Basketball Championship in Holland, Michigan.

The Lady Yellow Jackets, 33-0, are only the fifth unbeaten Division III women’s national championship team and the first since Washington-St. Louis in 2000.

“These kids couldn't have done anything more than what I asked from them all season – not just on the floor, but off the floor,” said Howard Payne coach Chris Kielsmeier. “I coach truly great
people, not just great players.”

Senior guard Meia Daniels scored 15 points and dished out five assists en route to being named the tournament's most outstanding player.

She received plenty of help from the play of her teammates in the paint. Senior forward Kimberly Hoffman led Howard Payne with 21 points and eight rebounds, while senior center Stacey Blalock added a double-double with 15 points and10 boards.

“It's something we'll always remember, even 30 years from now,” Daniels said.

Howard Payne, which led, 35-25, at the intermission, didn’t give Messiah much hope at mounting a comeback by outscoring the Falcons, 33-29, over the final 20 minutes.

Messiah, 30-3, concluded its season with a school record for wins and appeared in the national championship game for only the second time in program history.

“Did we play our best game? Absolutely not,” said Messiah coach Mike Miller, whose team was also national runner-up in 2001. “But I’m a firm believer that the other team has a lot to do with that. All the credit goes to Howard Payne. They played one of their best games, and they got it done. Obviously we’re disappointed we didn’t finish this off, but you have to give them the credit.”

Howard Payne also became the first American Southwest Conference team to win a Division III women’s basketball title.

“This is great. It gives our conference more respect," Kielsmeier said.

The championship game attendance of 2,607 was the fourth highest since the tournament started in 1982 and is the second largest on a neutral court.
