Trailing St. John Fisher by eight strokes entering the final round, St. John’s (Minnesota) came charging back with a final round 291 to win the Division III Men’s Golf Championship at Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia last week.

The Johnnies won their second consecutive national championship after shooting an opening-round 314, which put them outside the top 10 after the first day of competition. St. John’s (Minnesota) was 23 strokes better in the second round to get back in the mix.

Redlands shot a final-round 298 to jump ahead of St. John Fisher in the final standings, which fell to third overall. Methodist and Skidmore finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Oglethorpe, Wesley, Huntington, La Verne and Mary Hardin-Baylor rounded out the top 10 team finishers.

Junior Joe Schoolmeesters paced the Johnnies with a four-round total of 294 (+10) to finish sixth overall. Senior Matt Bohlig tied for 10th overall with a 13-over par 297, while juniors Joe Daly and Joey Polingo tied for 19th. Polingo collected five birdies to record a 31 on the final nine holes to finish with a 2-under par 69 in the final round Friday.

While the team result was the same this year, the race for the individual championship featured a new cast of characters. St. John Fisher senior Scott Harris, Jr. claimed the first national title in school history, shooting a four-round 285 to finish five strokes ahead of second-place finisher Chris Green (Illinois Wesleyan).

In 2005, Harris won the NJCAA Division III individual championship as a freshman at Monroe Community College. In his first season with St. John Fisher last spring, Harris led the Cardinals to a 17th-place overall finish.

Nathaniel James (Washington and Lee) and Will Scarborough (Wesley) tied for third with an 8-over par 292. Redlands golfer Ross Canavan rounded out the top-five individual finishers with a score of 293.

St. John’s (Minnesota) senior Clinton Dammann  was last year’s medalist and finished well out of the running this time around, shooting 35-over par to tie for 93rd.
