The NCAA News

For the 29th consecutive year, athletes, coaches and fans left the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships with one thought firmly in mind – it’s a Kenyon world; we’re just swimming in it.

The Lords cruised to their 29th straight title last weekend, winning nine of 20 overall events. Kenyon finished the championship with 635 points, nearly twice the output of second-place Johns Hopkins, which finished with 330. Denison, Emory and Williams rounded out the top-five team finishers.

Senior Josh Mitchell put on a show during the three-day meet, collecting six individual titles and a second-place finish while being named Division III swimmer of the year. Mitchell won the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke titles, and was also a part Kenyon’s championship 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relays.

Classmate Matthew Harris also won six titles, joining Mitchell on the four relays while also winning the 100-yard butterfly (47.94) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.44). Kegan Borlund won the 1,650-yard freestyle for the Lords, finishing in 15:31.96. Blair Withington, Marc Christian and Tom Irgens were all part of two championship relays for the Lords.

While Kenyon was extending its three-decade dominance in the sport, individual swimmers from other programs were making their marks in the pool. Washington and Lee senior Alex Sweet broke the Division III record in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the event in 19.85 seconds. Earlier in the meet, Sweet anchored Washington and Lee’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a 19.12 split, the fastest in Division III history.

Denison’s David Curtis won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and also anchored the team’s victorious 800-yard freestyle relay. Staten Island’s Pavel Buyanov won a pair of titles, claiming the 100- and 200-yard backstroke crowns. Other individual winners included Johns Hopkins’ John Thomas (200-yard backstroke), St. Olaf’s Nelson Westby (200-yard individual medley) and Emory’s Keith Diggs (400-yard individual medley).

Kai Robinson was named Division III diver of the year for his national championships in the one-meter and three-meter events. Johns Hopkins’ George Kennedy was named coach of the year, while Amherst diving coach Mary Ellen Clark was tabbed diving coach of the year.
