Watch out Kenyon: There’s another Division III program dominating its sport year in and year out. The Methodist women’s golf team won its 11th consecutive national championship this weekend, finishing 39 strokes ahead of second-place DePauw at the Division III Women’s Golf Championship at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa.

“The 11 didn’t even pop into my mind,” Methodist head coach Vici Pate said. “They’re all so different, but this is pretty special. It was a great one for the kids, and we had a great time getting to this point. Like I’ve said before, Wartburg and everyone in Iowa has treated us so well. We love the golf course, and the weather turned out nice the last couple days. It was a great couple of days.”

Last year, the Monarchs finished an all-divisions record 88 strokes ahead of DePauw, but the story was much different this time around, as Methodist was challenged during the first two days of competition.

After the opening round, Methodist found itself in the lead by just two strokes over Southwestern (Texas) and only 13 ahead after the second day of competition. The team’s depth took over on the final two days, however, and the Monarchs were able to pull away for another comfortable win.

“For the players, when they join the program, they know there’s a long tradition behind the program. They work hard to try to uphold that, and when they come through with something like this (win a national championship), they’re really proud of themselves,” Pate said.

The Monarchs were paced by sophomore Susan Martin, who became the third Methodist golfer in three years to win the individual national championship. Martin won the title with a 6-over par 294, three strokes ahead of teammate Katie Dick and Franklin’s Katie Tewell.

“I was just trying to hold it together during the last day,” said Martin, who finished ninth overall as a freshman. “I tried to remain focused on each shot during the round. It was great for me to be able to wind up the last day on the back nine. I’ve always played better in that situation, because I’ve felt like I’ve had to make up some shots from the front.”

Southwestern (Texas), which shot an impressive 309 in the opening round, fell to third place with a 320 and 321 in the second and fourth rounds, respectively. DePauw saved its best two rounds for the final two days to finish in the top three for the sixth straight year.

Illinois Wesleyan and Otterbein finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Gustavus Adolphus, St. Thomas, Williams, Allegheny and host Wartburg rounded out the top 10.
