TCNJ endowment drive honors softball coach
The College of New Jersey is honoring the memory of a nationally prominent coach by launching a fund-raising initiative to support the college’s softball program.
The college already has raised more than $25,000 toward the $100,000 goal for the fund honoring June Walker, who led the Lions to five Division III softball titles and compiled a record of 721-154 during her 22 seasons as coach.
TCNJ alumni, friends and colleagues are joining together to establish the endowment fund, which annually will provide support for the softball program. Upon achieving the $100,000 goal in gifts and pledges, the college will name the softball field at the college’s new softball complex Dr. June Walker Field. The complex opened in 2006.
Walker, who died in 2001, coached 65 all-American players and 14 Academic All-America honorees during her tenure.
The first team she coached to a national championship, the 1983 squad, plans to gather during the college’s Reunion Weekend May 2-4, when it will be recognized as a Team of Distinction during TCNJ athletics hall of fame ceremonies.
The college has made a form available online for contributing to the fund.
