Titans, Falcons share ‘good stuff’

Close finishes aren’t all that rare at the Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships -- seven meets have been decided by six or fewer points -- but a tie for first is a new wrinkle.

Illinois Wesleyan, looking for a sweep of this year’s indoor and outdoor team titles, recorded a sixth-place finish in the final relay Saturday to manage a tie for the crown with Wisconsin-River Falls.

Rachel Anderson again led the way for Illinois Wesleyan, winning the 200- and 400-meter dashes, but the Titans trailed Wisconsin-River Falls by three points entering the 1,600-meter relay.

Anderson, already having claimed the fifth and sixth individual titles of her career, wasn’t able to grab another come-from-behind relay win like she did in rallying the Titans to the indoor crown in March, but she still found enough speed to salvage the tie with the Falcons.

It’s the first outdoor team title for both teams, and the 35 points each team scored is the lowest winning score in championships history.

“I’m thankful it played out the way it did,” Anderson, who swept this year’s indoor and outdoor 400-meter-dash titles, told the Bloomington-Normal (Illinois) Pantagraph. “(Sharing the title) is just as good as winning (outright). We still get the banner and trophy and all that good stuff.”

Wisconsin-River Falls rode the steady strides of Becca Jordahl to its share of the crown. Jordahl placed third Thursday in the 10,000-meter run, then came back Saturday to win the 5,000-meter run.

The Falcons also picked up crucial scoring in the throwing events, where Vicki Cooper and Krista Hasselquest teamed up for 10 points in the shot put and Cooper also scored in the discus throw.

Wartburg made the final scoring closer yet by successfully defending its title in the 1,600-meter relay and pulling to within just one point of the meet co-champions. The Knights also were involved in what previously was the closest finish in championships history, claiming a one-point win over two other teams at the 2005 meet.

Two other competitors joined Anderson as double individual-event winners at the championships. Marcia Taddy of Wisconsin-Plattville successfully defended her 1,500-meter run title and also won the 800-meter run, while Redlands’ Natalie Calderon won her second straight long jump crown and also claimed the triple jump.

Also successfully defending a title was host Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Terry Schwamb, with a second straight win in the hammer throw.

Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg State finished an indoor-outdoor double in the hurdles events, following up her win at 55 meters in March with a 100-meter crown, and Crystal Blamy of Keene State completed an indoor-outdoor sweep of this year’s high jump events, helping her team to a fourth-place finish in team standings.
