Student-athletes in the USA South Conference are upping the ante in their community-service efforts.

The conference’s student-athlete advisory committee, which already annually sponsors a fall “Cans Across the Conference” food drive, now is collecting “Pennies for a Purpose” through April 6.

Student-athletes are conducting drives to collect loose change at the conference’s 11 member schools. The proceeds later will be donated to organizations selected by each school.

Much like “Cans Across the Conference,” the penny drive will be conducted as a competition among the schools’ student-athletes. The school that raises the most money will be named competition champion.

The conference’s annual food drive, which takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday, has generated donations of more than 62,000 items since its establishment in 2004. Greensboro led league schools in collecting more than 17,000 items last fall.

Each school’s weekly tally of collected change will be tracked at the conference’s SAAC Web site (http://www.usasouth.net/developer/SAAC.shtml).
