St. Olaf’s Cindy Book kicked off the season by collecting her 600th victory in women’s volleyball and two other coaches joined Division III’s elite 500-win club in the sport.

Book became the ninth Division III coach to collect 600 wins and the sixth active coach to do so during a Labor Day weekend tournament. A week later, William Paterson’s Sandy Ferrarella and Amherst’s Sue Everden each won their 500th match on the same day, boosting to 22 the number of Division III coaches who have reached the mark.

Sixteen of those coaches currently are active, led by the group’s only 1,000-match winner, Larry Bock of Juniata, who entered the season with 1,147 victories.

Book is in her 16th year at St. Olaf, where she has shared head coaching duties with Traci Cook since 2004. She also has coached at Keene State and Bethel (Minnesota). Book has led the Oles to seven Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship appearances, advancing to the semifinals in 1996.

Ferrarella is in her 30th season at her alma mater, while Everden is in her 23rd season at Amherst.

The 500-victory club could gain another member in the near future, as Wisconsin-Platteville’s Deb Schulman was just 10 wins away from the milestone entering last night’s match against Wartburg.
