Washington U. elevates women’s golf to varsity status
Washington U. in St. Louis has announced the addition of women’s golf as a varsity program beginning next year. The team has spent the past two years competing at the club level.
Women’s golf is the first sport to be added at the university since softball joined the mix in 2000. Washington U. will join New York University as the second school in the University Athletic Association to field a varsity women’s golf program. Presently, there are 155 programs within Division III that sponsor the sport.
"With the support of the university’s administration and Gender Equity Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, we are pleased to provide a new opportunity for Washington University’s students in competitive intercollegiate athletics," said Director of Athletics John Schael. "I am proud of the students who laid the foundation for intercollegiate golf and I look forward to the program’s continued growth, development and advancement."
