Wingate has unveiled its new Edward L. West Center for Athletics that houses the university’s athletics administration offices and the school of sport sciences.
The 6,000-square foot facility also includes new locker rooms for the men’s and women’s swimming program. The space includes an athletic training performance lab and a state-of-the-art smart classroom as well.
Wingate President Jerry McGee praised the building’s namesake during a dedication ceremony.
“Ed West is a highly respected and successful businessman,” McGee said. “He understands the values and academic excellence of Wingate University and supports our work financially and through his active participation on our Board of Trustees. Ed West is a true friend of Wingate University athletics.”
West is a graduate of Furman, where he ran track and was a Southern Conference champion and record holder in the mile relay. He also won league titles in the 440-yard dash and the 880-yard dash.
West co-founded and eventually became president of the General Steel Drum Corporation and the Innovative Driver Services Company.
