OTHER NOTES

38 of the 64 teams were in the 2003 field. Eight teams make the field for the first time in their history: Birmingham-So., Col. of Charleston, Jacksonville St., St. Bonaventure, Stony Brook, Texas Southern, UC Irvine and Youngstown St.

Western Ky. and Vanderbilt are in the tournament for the first time since 1980, while George Mason returns for the first time since 1993, TCU had not made it since 1994 and Virginia is in for the first time since 1996.

Miami (Fla.) is in the field for the 32nd consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida St. is making its 27th straight appearance, which ranks second all time. Other long consecutive streaks include Clemson (18), LSU (16), Cal St. Fullerton (13) and Stanford (11).

26 teams won at least 40 Division I games through May 30, and all but one are in the field. George Washington, which went 41-18 against Division I foes this year, did not make the tournament. There are 285 Division I teams sponsoring baseball in 2004, equaling the most from history (285 in 2003).

The SEC set a record by getting nine teams into the tournament, breaking its own record of eight in 2001 and '03. Other leagues fared well too. The ACC got six teams, tying the most by that league (1998); the Big 12 received six bids, tying their most ever (1999); and the Pac-10 tied their most bids ever by getting five teams, as it did in 1997.
