NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee announce selections for championships

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee today announced the 74 men and 74 women selected to participate in the 2004 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, to be held March 10-13 at Auburn Ski Club and Sugar Bowl Ski Area in Truckee, California. The championships will be hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno.

Alpine events will be run March 10 and 12 at Sugar Bowl Ski Area. The men's and women's giant slaloms will be held March 10, with the men's and women's slaloms conducted March 12. Nordic events will be held March 11 and 13 at Auburn Ski Club. The women's five-kilometer and men's 10-kilometer freestyle cross country races will be conducted March 11. The men's 20-kilometer and women's 15-kilometer classical cross country races will be held March 13.

Participants are selected on a regional basis from two designated regions for Alpine skiing (East and West Regions), and three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids are awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 student-athletes (three per gender per discipline) may participate from an institution.

The University of Utah captured their 10th skiing team championship at last year's championships in Hanover, New Hampshire. Katrin Smigun led the Utes by sweeping the women's Nordic events, winning the five-kilometer freestyle and 15-kilometer classical cross country races. Also capturing individual titles for Utah were Ben Thornhill in the men's giant slalom and Lina Johansson in the women's slalom. Other individual event winners included Jimmy Vika of New Mexico in the men's 10-kilometer freestyle cross country, Jamie Kingsbury of Vermont in the women's giant slalom, Christopher Cook of Northern Michigan in the men's 20-kilometer classical cross country and Bradley Wall of host Dartmouth in the men's slalom.
