INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Track and Field Committee has selected the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State as the site for the NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The championships will be co-hosted by Sacramento State and the Sacramento Sports Commission.
Sacramento State was selected after presentations were given at June 29, 2004, Division I Track and Field Committee meeting. The committee's selections were approved by the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet.
The site of the most dramatic facility renovation in the history of Sacramento State athletics, the stadium recently underwent a $1 million improvement in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in July, 2000. The Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex is hosting the 2004 Olympic trials which begin today.
John Kane, associate athletic director at Boston College and chair of the NCAA Division I Track and Field Committee, cited Sacramento's fan base, organizational expertise and favorable climate as key factors behind the awarding of the 2005, 2006 and 2007 championships.
"We think something special is happening in track and field, and Sacramento is where it's happening," Kane said. "I consider the week I spent in Sacramento during the 2000 Olympic Trials the best week of my track and field life."
