INDIANAPOLIS — Syracuse University basketball student-athlete Billy Edelin has been granted academic eligibility to compete in intercollegiate athletics by the NCAA membership services staff, the NCAA national office reported today.

Contrary to previous reports, this is the first official NCAA ruling on this case.  In approving the progress-toward-degree waiver request, the membership services staff noted Edelin’s recent academic improvement and the academic recovery plan presented by the institution as reasons for approval. Further, the NCAA membership services staff noted that this was Edelin’s first request for an academic waiver.

Edelin granted the NCAA national office permission to release information to the media regarding the waiver approval.
