INDIANAPOLIS—NCAA President Myles Brand has announced the members of a new presidential task force to study the future of college sports.

Brand first unveiled plans to create the presidential task force during his 2005 State of the Association speech at the NCAA Convention in January in Grapevine, Texas. He has since identified the members of the task force.

“This is an important effort to discuss and address the next steps in shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics,” Brand said. “The leadership of presidents and chancellors is critical in this effort.”

Brand said the presidential task force will conduct its work through four subcommittees, each chaired by a university president. The entire task force is chaired by Peter Likins, president of the University of Arizona.

The first subcommittee, Implications of Academic Values and Standards, will be chaired by Larry Faulkner, president of the University of Texas at Austin. Bernard Franklin, NCAA senior vice-president for governance and membership will serve as staff liaison.

Subcommittee members are Michael Adams, president, University of Georgia; Donald Beggs, president, Wichita State University; Scott Cowen, president, Tulane University; Shirley Ann Jackson, president, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Benjamin Ladner, president, American University; William Lennox, superintendent, U.S. Military Academy; Mark Murray, president, Grand Valley State University; Norval Pohl, president, University of North Texas; Phillip Stone, president, Bridgewater College (Virginia); John Welty, president, California State University, Fresno; and James Wright, president, Dartmouth College.

The second subcommittee, Fiscal Responsibility, is chaired by Likins. Jim Isch, NCAA senior vice-president for administration and finance, is staff liaison.

Subcommittee members are Clinton Bristow Jr., president, Alcorn State University; Philip Dubois, president, University of Wyoming; David Hardesty Jr., West Virginia University; Walter Harrison, president, University of Hartford; Robert Hemenway, chancellor, University of Kansas; Peter Magrath, president, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC); Kathryn Martin, chancellor, University of Minnesota Duluth; Sidney McPhee, president, Middle Tennessee State University; James Moeser, chancellor, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; David Skorton, president, University of Iowa; John Walda, partner, Bose, McKinney and Evans; and John Wiley, chancellor, University of Wisconsin, Madison.

The third subcommittee, Presidential Leadership of Internal and External Constituencies, is chaired by Gerald Turner, president, Southern Methodist University. David Berst, NCAA vice-president for Division I governance, is staff liaison.

Subcommittee members are Philip Austin, president, University of Connecticut; Robert Caret, president, Towson University; Carol Cartwright, president, Kent State University; Gordon Gee, chancellor, Vanderbilt University; Judy Genshaft, president, University of South Florida; George Hagerty, president, Franklin Pierce College; Kermit Hall, president, University at Albany; Robert Kustra, president, Boise State University; Robert Lawless, president emeritus, University of Tulsa;

The fourth subcommittee, Student-Athlete Well-Being, is chaired by Karen Holbrook, president, Ohio State University. Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice-president for membership services, is staff liaison.

Brand said the presidential task force will hold its first meeting June 9-10, 2005, in Tucson, Arizona, to develop a list of what it deems the most pressing problems facing intercollegiate athletics.
