INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee announced today the bracket for the 2005 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.
The teams will be vying for the right to compete at the 2005 NCAA Men’s College Cup on December 9 and 11 in Cary, North Carolina, at the SAS Soccer Stadium. North Carolina State University will host the championship.
The University of Maryland, College Park, the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season champion, was awarded the No. 1 seed. The University of New Mexico, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion, was the No. 2 seed. Indiana University, Bloomington, was named the No. 3 seed, while the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was the No. 4 seed.
The remaining top 16 seeds in order are the University of California, Los Angeles; Duke University; University of California, Berkeley; University of Connecticut; University of Akron; Old Dominion University; Pennsylvania State University; Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; University of Virginia; North Carolina State University; California State University, Northridge, and Dartmouth College. The top 16 teams receive a first-round bye.
Twenty-three conferences were awarded automatic bids for the 2005 tournament. The remaining 25 teams were selected at-large.
The automatic qualifying conferences and their representatives are: America East Conference, Stony Brook University; Atlantic Coast, Duke; Atlantic 10 Conference, University of Rhode Island; Atlantic Soccer Conference, Hartwick College; Atlantic Sun Conference, Stetson University; Big East Conference, Connecticut; Big South Conference, Coastal Carolina University; Big Ten Conference, Penn State; Big West Conference, Cal State Northridge; Colonial Athletic Association, Hofstra University; Conference USA, University of South Carolina; Horizon League, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; Ivy Group, Dartmouth; Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Marist College; Mid-American Conference, Akron; Mid-Continent Conference, Western Illinois University; Missouri Valley Conference, Creighton University; Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, New Mexico; Northeast Conference, Robert Morris University; Pacific-10 Conference, UCLA; Patriot League, Lafayette College; Southern Conference, University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and West Coast Conference, University of San Francisco.
Two teams will be making their first appearance in the tournament: Stony Brook and Stetson. The ACC led all conferences with eight teams, while the Big East had seven. The Pac-10, Ivy League and West Coast Conference each had three representatives.
Indiana won the 2004 Men’s College Cup, in penalty kicks, against the University of California, Santa Barbara, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
All first-round games will be played either November 18 or 19, while all second-round contests will be played November 22.
