NCAA Names Division I Women's Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA has named six former student-athletes and one coach to its NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team for their outstanding achievements while participating in NCAA competition. The NCAA is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships in several sports during the 2005-06 athletic season.

In 1981, the NCAA began sponsoring women’s championships, which opened the door to increased athletic and academic opportunities for female athletes. Today, the NCAA sponsors 44 women’s championships in 20 sports, providing more than 150,000 women with an opportunity to compete for national titles each year.

The Division I Women’s 25th Anniversary Team is as follows:

• Deitre Collins, Hawaii, Middle Blocker
NCAA all-tournament team (1982, 1983); NCAA national champion (1982, 1983); three-time AVCA all-American; Honda Broderick Cup Winner as the National Athlete of the Year (1982-83); Honda Broderick Cup nominee as Volleyball Player of the Year (1983, 1984); holds the record for solo blocks in one NCAA tournament (15 in 1982)

• Elaina Oden, Pacific, Middle Blocker
NCAA all-tournament team (1985, 1986); three-time AVCA all-American; NCAA national champion (1985, 1986); selected to 1980s NCAA all-Decade team

• Danielle Scott, Long Beach State, Middle Blocker
NCAA all-tournament team (1991, 1993); NCAA champion (1993); three time AVCA all-American; Honda Broderick Cup nominee as Volleyball Player of the Year (1993); AVCA and Volleyball Magazine National Player of the Year (1993); the all-time NCAA career hitting percentage leader (.421)

• Logan Tom, Stanford, Outside Hitter
NCAA all-tournament team (1999, 2001, 2002); national champion (2001); Honda Broderick Cup nominee as Volleyball Player of the Year ; two-time AVCA National College Player of the Year; four- time all-American

• Kerri Walsh, Stanford, Outside Hitter
NCAA all-tournament team (1996, 1999); national champion (1996, 1997); Honda Broderick Cup nominee as Volleyball Player of the Year; four-time AVCA all-American

• Natalie Williams, UCLA, Right Side Hitter
NCAA all-tournament team (1990, 1991, 1992); national champion (1990, 1991); two-time National Player of the Year; four-time all-American; first woman to earn all-American honors in both basketball and volleyball in the same year

• Dave Shoji, Hawaii, Coach
National champion (1982, 1983, 1987); national runner up (1988, 1996); NCAA championship semifinals (1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2003); became the first full-time coach for a women's program at the University of Hawaii, Manoa in 1981; was the coach at the first school to win back-to-back national championships titles (1982, 1983).

An NCAA sport committee selected an expert panel to pick the 25th Anniversary Team in Division I Women’s Volleyball. The panel, which consisted of current and former coaches; athletics administrators; sports information directors; student-athletes and coaches association members, used historical data and results from online public voting at www.ncaasports.com to make their decision.

The 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships begin the first week in December. The University of Texas at San Antonio will host the finals, December 15 and 17, at the Alamodome. The Division I Women’s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team has been invited to attend the NCAA finals.

The following NCAA women’s sports are celebrating their 25th anniversary during the 2005-06 season: Divisions I and III women’s field hockey; Divisions I, II and III women’s cross country; Divisions I, II and III women’s volleyball; Divisions I, II and III women’s swimming; Divisions I, II and III women’s basketball; National Collegiate women’s gymnastics; Divisions I, II and III women’s tennis; Division I women’s golf; Division I women’s lacrosse; Division I women’s rowing; Divisions I and II softball; and Divisions I, II and III women’s outdoor track.
