NCAA Names Division III Women’s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA has named six former student-athletes and two coaches to its NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team for their outstanding achievements while competing in NCAA competition. The NCAA is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships in several sports during the 2005-06 athletic season.

In 1981, the NCAA began sponsoring women’s championships, which opened the door to increased athletic and academic opportunities for female athletes. Today, the NCAA sponsors 44 women’s championships in 20 sports, providing more than 150,000 women with an opportunity to compete for national titles each year.

The Division III Women’s 25th Anniversary Team is as follows:

NCAA all-tournament team (1993, 1994); AVCA all-American (1992, 1993, 1994); 1993 AVCA Division III Player of the Year; 1994 AVCA Division III Player of the Year

• Therese Dorigan, Elmhurst, Setter/Outside Hitter

Larry Bock, Juniata College, Head Coach
NCAA national champion (2004); all-time leader in NCAA women’s volleyball coaching victories with a 1,032-169 record over 28 seasons, the most of any NCAA women’s volleyball coach regardless of division; AVCA National Coach of the Year (1984, 1989, 1993, 2004); five appearances in the national championship match; 18 appearances in the national semifinals; Juniata is the only team to appear in all 24 NCAA Division III tournaments, and the Eagles have advanced to at least the quarterfinal round in each tournament

Teri Clemens, Washington U. in St. Louis, Head Coach
NCAA national champion (1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996); AVCA National Coach of the Year (1991, 1994, 1996); her 1992 squad is the only NCAA Division III Tournament Team to finish a full season with a perfect record (40-0); coached 14 years at Washington University in St. Louis with a record of 529-77; NCAA Division III record for career-winning percentage of .873

An NCAA sport committee selected an expert panel to pick the 25th Anniversary Team in Division III women’s volleyball. The panel, which consisted of current and former coaches; athletics administrators; sports information directors; student-athletes and coaches association members, used historical data and results from online public voting at www.ncaasports.com to make their decision.

The NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championships begin November 11-12, 2005. The city of Salem and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference will host the finals, November 17-19, at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia.

The following NCAA women’s sports are celebrating their 25th anniversary during the 2005-06 season: Divisions I and III women’s field hockey; Divisions I, II and III women’s cross country; Divisions I, II and III women’s volleyball; Divisions I, II and III women’s swimming; Divisions I, II and III women’s basketball; National Collegiate women’s gymnastics; Divisions I, II and III women’s tennis; Division I women’s golf; Division I women’s lacrosse; Division I women’s rowing; Divisions I and II softball; and Divisions I, II and III women’s outdoor track.
