INDIANAPOLIS---Joe Kelly, president of the national nonprofit organization Dads and Daughters (DADS), will discuss the benefits of athletics to girls during the 2005 NCAA Gender Equity and Issues Forum at the JW Marriott in New Orleans, April 24-26.

Author of "Dads and Daughters: How to Inspire, Support and Understand Your Daughter When Shes Growing Up So Fast," Kelly will discuss the importance of the relationship between fathers and daughters and the many benefits of bringing athletics into that relationship. Kelly will speak during the Opening Session at 9 a.m. Monday, April 25, in Ile De France Room 1, 2 and 3.

Kelly, who was named "2003 Title IX Dad of the Year" by the Womens Sports Foundation, is also publisher of the international newsletter, "Daughters: For Parents of Girls," and is the author of several books. Through his leadership of DADS, he inspires fathers to actively and deeply engage in the lives of their daughters and galvanizes fathers and others to transform the pervasive cultural messages that devalue girls and women. Kelly has been featured as an expert on fathering healthy daughters on NBCs Today Show, NPRs Talk of the Nation, CBSs Early Show, MSNBC, Lifetime, Fox News Channel, the BBC, and Voice of America, as well as in Time, People, The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Parenting and dozens of other national and international media.

"Take Action" is the theme of the forum, which will provide participants with opportunities to learn about Title IX and other gender-equity and diversity topics.

Dozens of experts in the field of gender equity will share their insights, including Donna Lopiano of the Womens Sports Foundation; Jocelyn Samuels of the National Womens Law Center; Janet Judge, a sports law attorney with Verrill & Dana LLP; Christine Grant, faculty emeritus and former athletics director at the University of Iowa; and Judy Sweet, NCAA senior vice-president for championships and education services.

There will also be a book signing by Welch Suggs, author of "A Place on the Team: The Triumph and Tragedy of Title IX," and Ying Wushanley, author of "Playing Nice and Losing: The Struggle for Control of Womens Intercollegiate Athletics, 1960-2000."

Education sessions, question-and-answer periods, roundtable and divisional breakout discussions are all on the agenda (which is attached).

NCAA institutional staff members, conference administrators, students, federal government employees, high school employees, U.S. Olympic Committee members, national governing body staff and volunteers and the general public are invited to attend.
