INDIANAPOLIS---Journalist Walter Cronkite, U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona and former NCAA presidents Cedric Dempsey and Richard Schultz will be among the guest speakers at the 2006 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis January 6-9.
The NCAA Centennial, with the theme �Celebrating the Student-Athlete,� will also begin at Convention and will continue with events and activities throughout the year.
"A Conversation with Walter Cronkite� will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 8, in the Sagamore Ballroom in the Convention Center. Cronkite, an American icon who has covered literally every major news event during his more than 65 years in journalism, will talk with NCAA President Myles Brand, sharing his observations and opinions on current events as well as important events in the history of our nation and world. Cronkite will also take questions from delegates attending convention as well as the media.
Carmona, who was sworn in as the 17th Surgeon General of the United States in August 2002, will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon at noon Friday, January 6, in the Sagamore Ballroom in the Convention Center. He will speak about the positive impact of sports on the development of youth. Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Carmona dropped out of high school and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While enlisted, he received his Army General Equivalency Diploma, joined the Army�s Special Forces, ultimately becoming a combat-decorated Vietnam veteran. After leaving active duty, he attended Bronx Community College, of the City University of New York, where he earned his associate of arts degree. He later attended and graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, with a bachelor of science degree in 1977 and medical degree in 1979. At the University of California Medical School, he was awarded the prestigious gold headed cane as the top graduate. He also earned a master�s of public health from the University of Arizona in 1998. Carmona has worked in various positions in the medical field including paramedic, registered nurse and physician.
There will be a panel discussion, �An Inside Look at the NCAA: A Discussion with NCAA Executive Directors and Presidents� at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 7 in Rooms 101-103 of the Convention Center. Those participating will be NCAA President Myles Brand; former Big 10 Commissioner Wayne Duke; former NCAA President Cedric Dempsey; former NCAA Executive Director Richard Schultz; former NCAA Membership President James Frank, who was the first African-American to fill the post; and former NCAA Membership President Judith Sweet, who was the first woman to fill the post. The panel will be moderated by Joe Crowley, former NCAA membership president, interim president of the University of Nevada and author of �In the Arena: The NCAA�s First Century.� The NCAA began calling its executive director �president� following the NCAA reorganization in 1997 that eliminated the elected membership president position. The panel will reflect on the Association�s past and discuss their hopes for its future. They will also take questions from delegates and the media.
Also on Saturday is the Opening Business Session at 4 p.m. at the Murat Theater, in which NCAA President Myles Brand will present the State of the Association address. The NCAA will honor John Wooden, legendary UCLA men�s basketball coach and former United States Senator Birch
Bayh, who will each receive the NCAA President�s Gerald R. Ford Award during the opening business session.
Saturday will conclude with the Honors Celebration, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Murat Theater. The celebration features the NCAA's highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Award, as well as the Silver Anniversary Awards, Today's Top VIII Awards and Inspiration Awards.
