"Our hearts go out to all the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We commend and thank all of the colleges, universities and conferences who already stepped forward to provide support and aid. For those colleges, universities and conferences who want to do more, we suggest the use of kickoff scrimmages and the existing 2-game basketball exhibition game structure to support Hurricane Katrina relief. Traditionally, kickoff scrimmages have been used by schools as a source of funds for charitable purposes. We also ask that schools consider asking for voluntary contributions at the two exhibition basketball games and exhibition games in other sports during the fall. Given the catastrophic events that have taken place, we urge member colleges and universities to direct their charitable efforts in this manner. " -30-
