"As a clarification to recent comments made in the media, the NCAA enforcement staff attempted on numerous occasions to interview Maurice Clarett during its investigation of Ohio State University.

"Not once did Mr. Clarett respond to our repeated requests to meet with investigators or provide information.

"Specifically, over the course of a month in November and December 2004, phone calls were placed to Mr. Claretts reported cell phone numbers, relatives, former legal representatives and friends. But the messages left were never returned. In addition, attempts to contact him in person failed.

"The NCAA enforcement staff approaches every investigation in a thorough and impartial manner to fully investigate potential infractions at NCAA member institutions. However, as a voluntary membership organization, the NCAA has no subpoena authority or other mechanism to compel testimony from any individual.

"NCAA procedures prevent staff from commenting on specific elements of investigations prior to their completion. The procedures do, however, allow staff to correct erroneous or incomplete information that has been made public in the course of investigations."
