INDIANAPOLIS---The Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rules Committees voted Thursday by conference call to rescind a rules-change recommendation originally approved during annual meetings May 2-4, in Indianapolis.
The recommendation was to reduce by one the number of 30-second timeouts each team could call in games with electronic media. The current rule, which entitles each team four, 30-second timeouts and three can be carried over the second half, will be maintained.
“We were worried about stimulating the flow of the game,” Lynn Hickey, women’s committee chair and athletics director at the University of Texas at San Antonio, said. “Reducing the number of timeouts was a concern for our membership's various broadcast partners for both the regular season and the championship. The committees were sensitive to their concerns and will work with broadcast partners in the future to identify other ways to promote continuity.”
A complete list of basketball rules-change proposals, which are the same for both the men and the women can be found in the helpful links box above. All proposals will be reviewed by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel May 24. Proposals approved by the panel will be implemented in the 2006-07 rules book which will be available in August.
