INDIANAPOLIS--- NCAA Division III’s governing councils have selected leaders for 2007, with Franklin & Marshall College President John A. Fry named to chair the Division III Presidents Council and Valerie Cushman of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College named to chair the Division III Management Council.

Both currently serve as vice chairs of those groups.

In addition, President Paul S. Trible Jr. of Christopher Newport University was selected to succeed Fry as vice chair of the Presidents Council, and Kevin McHugh of The College of New Jersey will succeed Cushman as vice chair of the Management Council.

The officers’ terms begin with adjournment of the 2007 Convention.

Fry, who will succeed current Presidents Council Chair Ivory Nelson of Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), became Franklin & Marshall’s 14th president in 2002. He previously served for seven years as executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Lafayette College and also holds a master of business administration degree from the New York University Stern School of Business.

Fry recently was appointed by President Bush to serve on a commission that is planning the celebration of Benjamin Franklin’s 300th birthday.

Cushman will succeed Michael Miranda of Plattsburgh State University of New York, who is completing his second term as Management Council chair. Cushman heads the athletics department and also has been chair of physical education at Randolph-Macon Woman’s for the past nine years. She currently is preparing to establish men’s varsity sports programs as the school becomes a coed institution in fall 2007.

The State University College at Cortland graduate earned a master of science degree in sport management at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in higher education at Syracuse University.

Trible, who represented Virginia in Congress for 12 years, became Christopher Newport’s fifth president in 1996. He previously served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and one term in the U.S. Senate. He later served as a teaching fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University after leaving Congress in 1989.

Trible is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and also holds a law degree from Washington & Lee University.

McHugh has directed the athletics program for 15 years at TCNJ, where he holds the title of executive director of student development and campus programs. The former Columbia University varsity wrestler previously served stints as assistant athletics director at Yale University, where he managed operations and facilities, and Bowling Green State University, where he was responsible for day-to-day operations and administrative support for all revenue programs.

McHugh holds a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in addition to his bachelor’s degree from Columbia.
