INDIANAPOLIS ---The NCAA, in partnership with the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators, has prohibited pyramids more than two levels high and basket tosses without the use of a mat for the remainder of the 2006 basketball season, including the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Mens and Womens Basketball Championships. This ban will also be in effect for the NCAA Mens and Womens Final Fours.

After a Southern Illinois University cheerleader suffered a 15-foot fall on March 5, the Missouri Valley Conference barred certain airborne cheerleading stunts during its womens basketball tournament.

The NCAA requires that cheerleading squads conform to the AACCA Cheerleading Safety Guidelines. The AACCA rules committee will review current rules regarding stunts and make a decision for the 2006-07 year to determine whether this ban will be permanent.

In August 2005, the NCAA and Varsity Spirit Corporation, the nations leading training organization for cheerleaders, announced an initiative to improve safety for college cheerleaders. Beginning August 1, 2006, NCAA cheerleading coaches and advisors will be required to complete a safety course, certified by the AACCA, to ensure that their squads will be included in the NCAA Catastrophic Insurance Program for the 2006-07 school year.

The NCAAs Catastrophic Insurance policy covers cheerleaders at institutional intercollegiate athletic events, to and from the institutions intercollegiate athletics events, and practices. The policy does not cover cheerleading camp and cheerleading competition.
