INDIANAPOLIS --- The NCAA has announced that Brigham Young University-Hawaii graduate Petra Gaspar has been named the Division II Tennis Most Outstanding Student-Athlete for her accomplishments in NCAA championship competition. The honor, which was bestowed as part of the NCAA's 25th Anniversary of Women's Championships celebration, takes into account outstanding performances over the past 25 years.

Gaspar led her team to three NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship team titles (1999, 2000, 2002) and one runner-up title (2001). Gaspar finished the 1999 and 2000 seasons ranked first in both singles and doubles. In 2001, she finished the year ranked first in doubles and fourth in singles. In 2002, she finished the year ranked fourth in singles and second in doubles.

Gaspar graduated from BYU-Hawaii in 2002 with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism. She currently resides in Budapest, Hungary with her husband and 2-year-old son, Huba.

In 1981, the NCAA began sponsoring women's championships, which opened the door to increased athletic and academic opportunities for female athletes. Today, the NCAA sponsors 44 women's championships in 20 sports, providing more than 150,000 women with an opportunity to compete for national titles each year.

An NCAA panel selected the most outstanding student-athlete in Division II in the sport of tennis. The panel consisted of current and former coaches, athletics administrators, sports information directors and coaches association members, who used historical data and championship results to make their decision.

The 2006 NCAA Division II Women's National Tennis Championships begin May 4. The finals begin May 10 at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
