INDIANAPOLIS---A commemorative book celebrating the first 100 years of the NCAA, original artwork and a photo mosaic are among the special highlights of the NCAA Centennial Celebration, which begins at the NCAA Convention, January 5-9 in Indianapolis.

"Celebrating 100 Years of the Student-Athlete" is the theme of this years Convention. To help pay tribute to the student-athlete, Joe Crowley, former NCAA membership president and interim president of the University of Nevada, has written a coffee table book entitled, "In the Arena: The NCAAs First Century."

Crowley chronicles the development of the modern-day NCAA, focusing on the last 25 years. The book pays particular attention to the evolution of major legislation, the increasing role of women and minorities in the Association, the effect of litigation and governmental influence and ongoing changes in rules enforcement.

Crowley, the author of "No Equal in the World: An Interpretation of the Academic Presidency" and "The Constant Conversation," also monitors the increasing role of college and university presidents in the governance of the Association.

The generously illustrated book will be a must read for those who want to better understand the uniquely American enterprise of intercollegiate athletics. The Centennial book will be distributed to student-athletes who participate in 2006 NCAA championships and all 2006 NCAA Convention delegates. It will be released January 1, and will be available online and at selected book stores for $24.95. Ordering information is available at the NCAA Fulfillment Center Web site:

In addition, an original artwork piece designed by artist Marc Mellon will be unveiled in front of the more than 2,000 expected Convention attendees at a delegates reception Sunday evening at the NCAA national office. The artwork will be permanently displayed at the national office.

Marc Mellon is one of America's foremost representational sculptors, well known for his portrait busts, commemorative statues, and other works in bronze exploring the worlds of dance, sport, and family life. His works have been displayed from New York to Los Angeles to Tokyo, and are in numerous corporate, private, and public collections worldwide.

A photo mosaic featuring all current member institutions and conferences will also be displayed during Convention and throughout the Centennial Celebration. The photo mosaic includes more than 16,000 photos, which combine to make up the NCAAs Centennial logo, which measures 24 feet by 24 feet.

A Photomosaic is a compilation of thousands of photographs that, when entered via a special software program, will produce one image that projects a common theme of all the photographs. A Photomosaic of the Centennial logo has been commissioned and will debut at the 2006 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis. The objective is to have this unique art piece include at least one photo of significance from each member. These photos may also be used for other purposes relating to the Centennial in celebration of the student-athlete.

Beginning in January, the mosaic may be viewed online at: http://www2.ncaa.org/media_and_events/events/centennial/photomosaic/index.html

There will also be opportunities to place orders for a copy of the photo mosaic in January. MEDIA NOTE: The deadline for media to register for the 2006 NCAA Convention has passed.
