The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee has approved a license for a new bowl game in Houston beginning with the 2006-07 bowl season.

The subcommittee met with representatives from Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, the Houston Sports Authority, community leaders and other key officials, in La Jolla, California on Tuesday (June 27) to discuss the licensing of the new postseason bowl. The Bowl, which will operate under a new name and a new management team, replaces what was once the Houston Bowl.

"The subcommittee received a very impressive presentation from various organizations seeking a license for a postseason football game in Houston," said NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee chair Mark Womack. "The group addressed all the issues which were raised by the committee in April. We also were pleased to see the commitment toward community involvement, as that is an integral piece in the success of the event. The subcommittee feels this new bowl game will provide a very positive experience for the two competing institutions and its student-athletes," Womack said.

The subcommittee considered several factors for licensing:

  • Having a sound management and organization structure in place that can demonstrate the ability to capitalize on the local community support, television package, title sponsor and event management experience.
  • A business plan and projected financial plan that can demonstrate successful bowl operations that can meet the financial commitment to the participating conferences.
  • A line of credit to address financial obligations to the participating conferences.
"We are excited about the future of postseason college football in Houston," said Big 12 Conference commissioner Kevin Weiberg. "The Big 12 has a strong on-going interest in the greater Houston area. It is a dynamic metropolitan area and we believe the bowl game will do well with this restructured arrangement."

The Bowl will be managed by Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, which is a sports marketing agency affiliated with the Houston Texans. Lone Star Sports and Entertainment has extensive experience in managing major sporting events, many of which have been conducted in Reliant Stadium. The name of this new bowl and other details will be announced by Lone Star Sports and Entertainment at a later date.
