"The NCAA staff review committee has removed Mississippi College from the list of colleges and universities subject to restrictions on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery at NCAA championships.
"In the review of the particular circumstances regarding Mississippi College, the NCAA staff review committee noted that Mississippi College�s use of the Choctaw name and associated imagery had received the approval of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Therefore, the college will not be subject to the terms of the policy restrictions.
"Although the NCAA Executive Committee continues to believe the stereotyping of Native Americans is wrong, it recognizes that a Native American tribe is a distinct political community and, therefore, respects the authority of the tribe to permit universities and colleges to use its name and imagery. The NCAA recognizes that there are, and will be, disagreements among Native American individuals, groups and tribes concerning the use of mascots, nicknames and imagery in sports. In those instances in which a tribe endorses the use of its name and associated imagery, the NCAA defers to the judgment and will of the tribe.
"The NCAA position on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery has not changed, and the NCAA remains committed to ensuring an atmosphere of respect and sensitivity for all who participate in and attend our championships. Requests for reviews from other institutions will be handled on a case-by-case basis."
