Statement By NCAA Senior Vice-President For Governance And Membership Bernard Franklin On Catawba College Review

"The NCAA staff review committee has removed Catawba College from the list of colleges and universities subject to restrictions on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery at NCAA championships.
"In the review of the particular circumstances regarding Catawba College, the NCAA staff review committee noted that the college's use of the name "Catawba Indians" and associated imagery has received the approval of the Catawba Indian Nation and the institution will not be subject to the terms of the policy. It is important to note that the staff review committee has approved the use of the name �Catawba Indians� and not the use of the generic term "Indians."
"Although the NCAA Executive Committee continues to believe the stereotyping of Native Americans is wrong, it recognizes that a Native American tribe is a distinct political community and, therefore, respects the authority of the tribe to permit universities and colleges to use its name and imagery. The NCAA recognizes that there are, and will be, disagreements among Native American individuals, groups and tribes concerning the use of mascots, nicknames and imagery in sports. In those instances in which a tribe endorses the use of its name and associated imagery, the NCAA defers to the judgment and will of the tribe."
"The NCAA position on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery has not changed, and the NCAA remains committed to ensuring an atmosphere of respect and sensitivity for all who participate in and attend our championships.
