INDIANAPOLIS --- Barbara Jacobs resigned her position as
secretary-rules editor for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee
Friday. Jacobs, who has volunteered her time as the national rules
interpreter since 1998, will focus her efforts on her full-time
position as the assistant commissioner for the Big East Conference.
"The Rules Committee owes our endless gratitude to Barbara for her
countless hours of dedication to the rules-writing process,” said Ronda
Seagraves, committee chair and associate director of athletics at
Southwestern University (Texas). “Her knowledge and background have
played an extremely important role, particularly in the area of
officiating. The expertise that she brought to our meetings will be
greatly missed. The Committee applauds her numerous years of service to
the game of women’s basketball.”
The secretary-rules editor, who is a non-voting member of the rules
committee, is charged with making in-season interpretations, updating
the rules book, educating coaches and officials on the rules of the
game, and helping the committee consider future rules changes.
A national search will begin immediately to replace Jacobs. The
secretary-rules editor must have a background in coaching or
officiating and have an excellent working knowledge of the rules.
The playing rules control what happens on the court when an official
and an opponent are present. The rules are the same for all three
divisions and for regular season and championships play.
