INDIANAPOLIS
--- Presidential leadership from nearly 130 college campuses across the
country will meet in San Diego for the second Division II Presidents
and Chancellors Summit. The event will be held at the Marriott Hotel
and Marina in San Diego on June 22 and 23.
NCAA
President Myles Brand will open the business session to discuss trends
in intercollegiate athletics and the strategic direction of Division
II. The summit will be dedicated to outlining the future challenges and
opportunities for the Division, as well as celebrating recent
successes. The campus leaders in attendance will be one of the first to
view the research model designed to quantify the financial benefits of
the Division II partial-grant model for athletics aid. Other topics of
discussion include the division’s partnership with CSTV, Division II
community engagement initiatives, and an update on the Division II
Academic Success Rate.
The
summit will feature 18 speakers and presenters, including Brand;
Charles Ambrose, Pfeiffer, President of Pfeiffer University and chair
of the Division II Presidents Council; CSTV Executive Vice President
Tim Pernetti; and sports-marketing consultant Rich Luker. In addition,
fourteen Division II presidents and chancellors are scheduled to speak
or appear on discussion panels during the summit.
The
first Presidents and Chancellors Summit was held two years ago and
marked a significant turning point for the future direction of Division
II. A clear path for the future of Division II emerged from this first
summit, which led to several important milestones for the membership.
These
milestones include the development of a strategic-positioning platform
that identifies Division II’s unique attributes and characteristics,
which serves as a guidepost for decision making within the division.
This platform serves as the foundation for the visual identity
campaign, toolkit and community engagement initiative for the division
to give Division II a unique identity within the NCAA parent brand.
The
new Division II visual identity was created to further reflect the
characteristics of the division, which is centered on the “I Chose
Division II” moniker and the six primary attributes of Division II –
Learning, Service, Passion, Sportsmanship, Resourcefulness and Balance.
A hexagon serves as the graphical theme and a quick visual
representation of the relationship between all of these
characteristics.
Community
engagement is another Division II initiative aimed at bringing the
division’s strategic positioning platform to life at the local level.
Through this strategy, athletics can serve as the “front porch” in
building relationships between community and institution.
NCAA
Division II is one of the three membership divisions at the National
Collegiate Athletic Association, a volunteer organization comprising
more than 1,200 institutions, conferences and affiliated organizations.
Division II is a group of institutions and conferences that serve more
than 75,000 student-athletes nationwide, including Alaska, Hawaii and
Puerto Rico. The emphasis for the student-athlete experience in
Division II is a comprehensive program of learning and development.
The
Division II approach provides growth opportunities through academic
achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and the
development of societal attitudes in service to the community. The
balance and integration of these different areas of learning provide
Division II student-athletes with a path to graduation while
cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.
