NEW YORK -- Eddie Fogler,
former head coach at Wichita State University, Vanderbilt University
and the University of South Carolina, has been named to the NIT
Selection Committee. Fogler led all three teams to the NCAA Tournament
and the NIT, winning the NIT with Vanderbilt in 1989. Fogler, who was
twice named the National Coach of the Year, replaces legendary North
Carolina men's head coach Dean Smith, who served on the committee since
its inception in 2005.
"The impact of Dean's presence on
the Committee is still being felt. When the first-ever at-large
selection committee was assembled, any questions regarding the
credibility and commitment to the new NIT were immediately put to rest
when told of Dean's participation. We are forever grateful for his time
with us," said CM Newton, who like Coach Smith, is a member of the
Naismith Hall of Fame.
Fogler's appointment begins immediately.
"Eddie
brings a wealth of expertise and experience with him to the committee,
and we look forward to his contributions," added Newton.
Along
with Newton and Fogler, the Committee is comprised of Rudy Davalos, Don
DeVoe, Gene Keady, Reggie Minton, Jack Powers and Carroll Williams.
