INDIANAPOLIS---
The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee has reprimanded
University of Michigan men’s ice hockey student-athlete T.J. Hensick
for inappropriate comments made during the postgame news conference
following a first-round game of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey
Championship against the University of North Dakota on March 24 in
Denver.
Specifically, Hensick made comments that were critical of the
officiating at the postgame press conference. This behavior constituted
misconduct as defined in NCAA Bylaw 31.1.10. Thus, the committee has
voted to issue a public reprimand of Hensick and withhold
transportation and per diem expenses for his participation in the West
regional.
“The committee was very disappointed with this behavior and strongly
believes that the championship should not be tarnished by such acts,”
said Martin Scarano, chair of the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey
Committee. “These types of actions only serve to discredit the
individual, the University of Michigan and the NCAA Division I Men's
Ice Hockey Championship,” he said.
The NCAA is a voluntary membership organization of colleges and
universities that participate in intercollegiate athletics. Two of the
main purposes of the Association are to maintain intercollegiate
athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the
student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Activities of
the NCAA membership include formulating rules of play for NCAA sports,
conducting national championships, adopting and enforcing standards of
eligibility and studying all phases of intercollegiate athletics.
