NCAA Responds to Recent Media Reports Regarding the College World Series Being "Up For Grabs"

For Immediate Release

Friday, October 26, 2007

Contrary to Dave Kotok’s story in the Omaha World-Herald published Tuesday, October 23, the College World Series is not “up for grabs.”

The NCAA’s contract with the City of Omaha for the CWS expires in 2010. However, the NCAA is in discussions with Omaha city and civic leaders about future options with the College World Series in Omaha. Yearly the NCAA publishes a list of all future championships dates and sites that have been approved and when a championship site has not been determined the dates may be provided, but no location is listed. Therefore, the fact no site was listed for the 2011 NCAA Men’s College World Series meant that no agreement exists for the conduct of the CWS in that year. It does not mean that the NCAA will automatically solicit bids from other sites, particularly given the long history of the CWS in Omaha.

There has not been any discussion about moving the CWS to any other city. The listing of future championships is a routine exercise for the NCAA national office.
