INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee announced Wednesday that Plattsburgh State University and the Olympic Regional Development Authority will host the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championships at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.

“The committee is excited to be going back to Lake Placid for a second straight year,” said Bruce Delventhal, chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee. “Last year (SUNY) Potsdam did a great job of hosting the event. We broke all sorts of attendance records and just knew we had to give Lake Placid another try.”

The 2008 championship saw its attendance numbers quadruple from the previous year as more than 10,000 fans witnessed the event.

Delventhal, also the athletics director at Plattsburgh State, added, “On behalf of Plattsburgh State, we are thrilled to be a part of another quality NCAA championship event. We have had the pleasure of hosting so many NCAA events here and we are looking forward to being a part of another great championship experience for both the student-athletes and coaches.”

Next year’s championship will mark the fourth time Plattsburgh State has hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championships, as it first played host in 1987 and then again in 1992 and 1998. In addition, the University has hosted the 2006 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championships as well as multiple quarterfinal and semifinal rounds for both the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Championships.

The 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championships, which consist of two national semifinals games and the championship game, will be played March 21-22.
