Dewayne Patterson’s July 28, 2008 article in the Alabama Daily Sentinel erroneously reported former Alabama assistant coach Ronnie Cottrell won a $30 million verdict against the NCAA in 2005. That is incorrect.   Cottrell won a $30 million judgment against recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper, who provided NCAA investigators with information during an investigation into Alabama football recruiting.  But the trial judge threw out the verdict and ordered a new trial. The Alabama Supreme Court upheld the trial judge ruling, as well as others that had eliminated the NCAA as a defendant. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Cottrell’s appeal effectively ending the NCAA’s involvement in the case.
