INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee has announced that Stony Brook University will host the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y., on May 27 and 29, 2011.

Stony Brook will host the championship for the first time, becoming just the second host for the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship from the state of New York since the inception of the championship in 1982. Syracuse University hosted the championship in 2003.

“We are excited to award the 2011 championship to Stony Brook University,” said Ryan Bamford, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee and senior associate director of athletics at Yale University. “The committee was thoroughly impressed with Stony Brook’s bid and recent NCAA championship events hosted by the university. Those factors, combined with the growth of lacrosse on Long Island, will no doubt make this an outstanding championship weekend.”

"We are honored to have the opportunity to host the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship,” said Jim Fiore, Stony Brook University director of athletics.  “We look forward to partnering with the NCAA to showcase the great sport of women’s lacrosse not only to the fans of Suffolk County, but also to all the fans who will join us on Long Island for this championship event.”

Stony Brook, with a strong tradition of hosting lacrosse events, was just awarded a 2010 men’s lacrosse quarterfinal. Towson University, in Maryland, has served as the host site for the women’s championship for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009) and will host the championship for a third straight year at Johnny Unitas Stadium, May 28 and 30, 2010.
